EA releases new Stallion Safe Practise Guidelines

Nicola Turner, Thursday, 4 November 2010

In the interests of public safety Equestrian Australia (EA), with the assistance of the National Sport Committees, has developed the following Stallion Safe Practise Guidelines for the management of stallions at competitions and public venues.

EA requests that all Australian events running under Equestrian Australia and FEI rules, make the use of the horse and float Stallion Identification Discs compulsory effective as of 01 January 2011 (see point 1 of the guidelines).

Equestrian Australia also recommends events and organisations adopt the following set of guidelines for the handling of stallions.

1. Stallions should wear official ‘discs’ at all times whilst at the venue. These discs are to be worn on both sides of head collars and bridles or on some part of the horse on both sides to identify to others that the horse is a stallion.
2. No stallion is to be moved around a venue without displaying the stallion discs and a suitable restraint. The restraint can be a bridle, a rearing bit or a chain lead rein over the nose or under the jaw.
3. Where possible all stallions are to be stabled. If suitable stabling is not available stallions need to wear a collar, which is securely tied to the outside of a truck or trailer. Stallions tied to the outside of a truck or trailer MUST be supervised at all times.
4. Stallions may be substituted in prize-giving ceremonies with another horse should the rider deem it to be safer.
5. It is recommended that riders and handlers of stallions at shows be over the age of 17 years; however, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to understand the full code of conduct for stallions at events. With the exception of rule 1.1.8 in the Show Horse Rules and Guidelines, stallions are not permitted in Show Horse classes at EA State or Championship events. All riders/handlers under the age of 17 years must be supervised by an adult/parent/guardian whilst at the event.
6. It is the stallion owner’s/rider’s responsibility to ensure that all possible safety precautions are taken.
7. Floats/Trucks that transport stallions should display the official
magnet giving notice that there is a stallion on board.

These guidelines are consistent with Equestrian Australia's focus on improving safety by identifying risks and putting in place measures to mitigate those risks.

Stallion identification packs are available for purchase from the Equestrian Australia National Office (only the approved discs will be permitted).

The packs consist of:
2 x magnets for trucks/trailers
2 x halter discs (as per point 1 of the guidelines)
2 x bridle discs (as per point 1 of the guidelines)
2 x saddlecloth discs. (As per point 1 of the guidelines)
The packs cost $40.00 each including GST.

If you wish to order the packs you can use the EA Stock Order form.

FEI UNVEILS IPHONE APP FOR EQUINE PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES LIST

2 Nov 2010

The FEI has today launched a mobile phone application which gives those involved in horse sport much faster and easier access to crucial information on prohibited substances.

The Clean Sport app allows immediate access to the FEI Equine Prohibited Substances online database, which was developed early in 2010.

The app will initially be available for iPhone users only, however the FEI is investigating how the technology could be adapted for other smart phones.

The app is available to download Free of Charge from today at the iTunes Store.

As well as enabling users to easily navigate the Equine Prohibited Substances database, the app also includes short definitions on each substance as well as a selection of common trade names to avoid confusion.

There is also a feedback function which will enable users to seek further advice or clarification, should they need to.

The database was initially launched on the FEI website earlier in 2010. Since then a number of small improvements have been made to its functionality, including optimisation of the search function and automatic email acknowledgement.

“This is a truly ground-breaking service for those involved in horse sport. It will enable users to have finger-tip access to often crucial information about prohibited substances which is another huge asset in the FEI’s Clean Sport campaign,” said Harald Muller, FEI Director of Education & Standards.

The Equine Prohibited Substances database can be accessed on the FEI website, here.

The EFA NSW Volunteer Database

What’s it all about?

In an attempt to better manage and serve our volunteer arm, the EFA NSW has established a volunteer database which will be managed in the office. The database will contain the names and other details of volunteers throughout the state and will be used not only to coordinate the use of volunteers for events and other equestrian activities and help clubs access volunteers, but it will be an important tool in helping us resource and communicate better with all.

When a volunteer joins our database, they will receive a cap, pen, and lanyard, all handy for use at events. They will also receive free subscription to Equest News if not currently a member of the EFA. All volunteers on the database will be eligible to be nominated for the annual Volunteer of the Year* which will be awarded at the EFA NSW awards, and by virtue of this award, they will also be in the running for a major prize.

The database will contain the volunteer’s contact details, the disciplines they are interested to work in, the areas of the state they are willing to work in, their basic volunteer experience, the roles they are prepared to fill and, most importantly, if they wish to be contacted by clubs in addition to the ones with which they are currently involved. If a volunteer has just one or two clubs they wish to stay with and requests that the EFA NSW does not circulate their information to other clubs, we will ensure that their details are not circulated. There is no obligation to volunteer for clubs or events over the ones you have indicated.
