Important information on Hendra virus
Thursday,
17 December 2009
The NSW Department of Industry and Investment (Primary
Industries) believes that it is important for people who come in contact
with horses to be aware of the potential risks posed to them by Hendra
virus. This will enable them to assess the risk that contact with horses
poses to them, in their own situation.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE HORSE INDUSTRY: HENDRA VIRUS
It is important that all sectors of the horse industry understand the
risks posed by Hendra virus. Hendra virus is carried by fruit bats, and
may cause fever, respiratory and/or nervous illness when it infects horses.
While horses rarely become infected, infected horses may infect humans,
and the disease has severe consequences. It is usually fatal in horses,
and four of the seven people known to have become infected have died,
despite intensive therapy in hospital.
Minimise the risk to yourself and your horse by:
- preventing horses from eating or drinking feed or water that may be
contaminated by body fluids from fruit bats roosting, feeding or flying
overhead and
- knowing the signs of Hendra and what to do if you suspect infection.
The following links provide information on Hendra virus that will assist
you to understand the disease and how to minimise the risk of infection.
I&I NSW strongly recommends that you pass this information on to your
members and industry contacts and/or staff who may handle horses.

The EFA NSW Volunteer Database
What’s it all about?
In an attempt to better manage and serve our volunteer arm, the EFA NSW
has established a volunteer database which will be managed in the office.
The database will contain the names and other details of volunteers throughout
the state and will be used not only to coordinate the use of volunteers
for events and other equestrian activities and help clubs access volunteers,
but it will be an important tool in helping us resource and communicate
better with all.
When a volunteer joins our database, they will receive a cap, pen, and
lanyard, all handy for use at events. They will also receive free subscription
to Equest News if not currently a member of the EFA. All volunteers on
the database will be eligible to be nominated for the annual Volunteer
of the Year* which will be awarded at the EFA NSW awards, and by virtue
of this award, they will also be in the running for a major prize.
The database will contain the volunteer’s contact details, the disciplines
they are interested to work in, the areas of the state they are willing
to work in, their basic volunteer experience, the roles they are prepared
to fill and, most importantly, if they wish to be contacted by clubs in
addition to the ones with which they are currently involved. If a volunteer
has just one or two clubs they wish to stay with and requests that the
EFA NSW does not circulate their information to other clubs, we will ensure
that their details are not circulated. There is no obligation to volunteer
for clubs or events over the ones you have indicated.
Benefits
EFA NSW Volunteers will be recognised with Volunteers are Important People
(V.I.P.) merchandise
EFA NSW Volunteers will be eligible for annual awards and prizes.
EFA NSW Volunteers will receive Equest News.
EFA NSW Volunteers will have increased access to EFA NSW staff, education
resources and training days.
EFA NSW Volunteers will feel part of a community that benefits the entire
sport.
EFA NSW Volunteers can choose to become even more involved in events and
other activities such as clinics.
EFA NSW Volunteers will have an ease of access to becoming involved as
officials through the EFA system if they wish.
*Please note: Club committee members who qualify as Volunteers do not
have to be included in the database, but they are very welcome to join
if they wish.
